About The Valuer at AskTheValuer.com.au My friends call me 'JL' and I'm the Valuer behind AskTheValuer.com.au. I'm a Melbourne-based valuer and property consultant providing independent valuations and unbiased information and advice on Melbourne properties...including your property. What makes me think that I am qualified to provide such valuations and information...and why should you trust the information that I provide? Well...to begin with being a migrant myself and having siblings and scores of relatives and friends who have also migrated to this beautiful and most livable city of Melbourne...I have experienced first hand and understand the anxiety, problems and hard lessons learnt by migrants on their property purchases and investments. I have seen how the lack of property knowledge or simply mere ignorance have resulted in even smart people (who made their money in non-property related vocations) losing large sums of money...just because their pride got in their way...of not seeking unbiased and relevant information. I gained my property-related experience from an overseas property group, an Australian national valuation group and as a contract valuer. Since 2004 I have spent most of my waking hours (except Sundays) on property...
...reading about property... ...writing about property... ...talking about property... ...learning about property... ...inspecting and measuring property... ...taking photos of property... ...driving around property neighbourhoods... ...looking at certificates of title, subdivision plans and zoning information... ...researching and analysing sold and leased property... ...attending property open houses and auctions... ...rationalising property values... ...adopting various valuation methodology to determine property values... ...keeping ahead with the latest property news...   ...studying building plans and analysing construction costs...  ...viewing contracts of sale and leases...  ...and the list goes on.
I have formal university qualifications in both property and civil engineering and am also a Member of the Australian Property Institute and a Certified Practising Valuer. I am also a Licensed Estate Agent. I have been involved in the valuation and assessment of over 1,800 properties ranging from detached dwellings, vacant land parcels, shops and factories to high rise office buildings, apartments blocks and development projects.

Ask The Valuer
With my Civil Engineering foundation coupled with over 18 years of non-property related experience in sales, marketing and general management of predominantly building materials enterprises, I believe I have a special skillset which this blend of property and non-property related experience can provide.  With the benefit of this background I am confident to provide more than just FAIR, HONEST and INDEPENDENT valuation and property advice. All the very best in your property journey!
P/S   All CPVs have to undergo years of on-the-job training and experience in the field, on top of rigorous degree-level education before they are eligible to sit in front of three of their peers (in an oral examination) and could be asked virtually any property valuation related question. Only if successful can they then qualify to be a Certified Practising Valuer who is accredited with the Australian Property Institute (API), Australia’s premier property professional organisation. Following accreditation, CPVs continue to update their knowledge with regular professional development courses within the API.
